A fair sized chunk of concrete fell today from the I-95 overpass directly onto the sidewalk on Pleasant St. I’m thinking it would have hurt a person.

In the upper photo, the bicycle helmet is for scale. Yes, I appreciate the irony of taking off a helmet in a place where chunks of concrete fall from a highway overpass.

The lower photo shows the likely place from which the chunk fell. A bridge worker I talked to said the white markings indicate where a chunk will likely fall.

It’s a fact. This bridge is crumbling.

UPDATE – 5/8 – 10:30 am
DoT repsonded to an email I sent and is having the bridge inspected today.

That’s pretty scary. Do you know how old was the bridge and what were recent weather conditions in the area?

CC – The bridge is from the original I-95 construction, so 50’s/early 60’s. Weather is New England, so it basically sucks. Bridge is over a river that is the northern-most tidal /brackish section of Narragansett Bay, so it has all those ocean air elements as well. Check out more on this at my new location.
